The Erie & Southern is an operations-focused layout. Its design will be centered around the industries that it serves, both online and off. As of this writing, I plan to build most of the major structures before a single track is laid, which in my opinion, is more prototypical. This way, track work can be built around the industry, not the other way around.
Coal is the beating heart of the E&S. As outlined in its history, the first tracks were laid to accomodate Ohio’s budding coal industry. As such, coal operations will be a major feature of the layout.
Other industries will include a prototypical sampling of those served by Ohio rails. I also plan to simulate “through freight” from other railroads in the form of interchange traffic, which will give the layout near limitless possibilities.
